How to get cash money in Bali
If you need money during your vacation or short stay in Indonesia the best way to get cash is to use an ATM. Either you can use your maestro card or credit card or you  change cash money in one of the numerous money changer offices. Traveller cheques could be used as well, but it is a little bit more complicated and not every money changer accepts traveller cheques.

ATM
If you use an ATM usually your bank in your home country charges a fee for the transaction. In Germany it is usually 5 Euro for every tranction. If you are a holder of a Visa Card issued by the German Bank "DKB", then every transaction is free of charge at ATMs signed with the Visa logo.

At ATMs with a sign "50.000" you get 50.000 IDR bank notes with a maximum amount of 1.250.000 IDR (ca. 80 Euro or appr. 105 US$). If it is written "100.000" on the ATM machine, then you get a maximum amount of 2.000.000 IDR (ca. 135 Euro or appr. 175 US$) in 100.000 IDR bank notes. (Currency exchange rates based on January 31, 2009)

Money Changer

Money exchange is both an art and a con in Bali. In some money changer offices you need your passport. Dont take your passport onto the street to change money. Use a photocopy of the first (identification) page for this. If you find an occasional moneychanger who wont accept your photocopy then leave and go to the next one who wont be far away. Make at least one copy for each week that you will be in Bali as paper deteriorates rapidly in the humidity.

The local money is the Indonesian Rupiah – (Rp).

There are many possiilty to change money:

  • Banks (usually they take commission and the currency excange rate is not good)
  • Hotels
  • Some Supermarkets and photo shops
  • licensed money changer offices
  • shops or counters at the street
  • small counters at the street (not recommended, usually they offer very good rates on their signs but they try to cheat)

Comments ATM Bank BNI
Actually,
In my experience, when you have an ATM with 100.000 Rp. sign, the total amount one can take per transfer differs per bank.
I always go to Bank BNI which provides a total of 3.000.000 Rp. per transfer when it is a 100.000 Rp. ATM. That is very handy because this will cost you less transfer fees.

Comments Money Changer
Be AWARE!! If something appears too good to be true you can bet that its not and particularly if you choose to dice with this money changer you`ll learn that the hard way. Most of them are dishonest.
All of the tricks in the book will be tried and if you pick them all the supply of money will be all gone and you’ll be intimidated and shown the door. If you manage to change some money you’ll know you’ve been cheated but you won’t know how. They were Great dropper of money into his lap, claims it is commission if caught even though his sign clearly claims "No Commission". Watch out for the ‘power of 10’ scam. It relies on your confusion about so many zeros in the sums. You wind up getting only a tenth of the correct amount when a zero falls off the end of the total or you get 5,000 Rp notes instead of 50,000Rp or 1,000’s instead of 10,000’s.
It might surprise you but many travellers have been caught by a temporary inability to count in the heat of the moment - the money changer counts out for you, "one hundred, two hundred three hundred, four hundred, five hundred, "OK Sir? Good" , seven hundred, eight hundred, nine hundred, one thousand." So, what's the problem? Where did six hundred go?
